Here’s what we like
- Easy setup and installation
- Picturesque lights
- Customization application

And what we don’t do
- Angles are almost impossible
- There is no easy shape adjustment
Neon rope lights come in three sizes: 2 meters (6.56 feet), 3 meters (10 feet) and 5 meters (16.4 feet). They cost $ 59.99, $ 79.99 and $ 119.99, respectively — if that sounds a little expensive for RGB lights, you haven’t used Govee lights yet.
Design: not your average RGB
- Length: 5 meters (16.4ft)
- Number of light bulbs: 420
- Lumens: 173 / m
- Lighting Type: RGBIC LEDs
- Smart house enabled: Yes
The 5 meter neon lights are the first Govee product I have had the pleasure of using. I have illuminated my desk and shelves with several different RGB light strip options over the years, but they are all fading compared to the quality of this RGBIC (red, green, blue independent control) light with a rope.
For a quick context, neon lights with a rope are resistant to IP67 – which means they need up to 30 minutes to swim in 1 meter water and swim as planned. I wouldn’t intentionally test this, of course, but your rope lights will be safe in the rain, puddles, or a quick dip in the sink or tub. Very few other RGB options of similar price that look this good offer you that kind of protection.
Something you’ll probably see on other light strips is the meager number of LEDs and the substantial gaps between them. This makes one long strip of one color easy enough, but mixing colors and creating gradients is often impossible or inconspicuous.
420 LED beads illuminate the 5 m neon light of the rope, on the other hand, making gradients as light as the “Gradient” switch hook in Govee Home (more on that later).
The LEDs are enclosed in the exterior of a silicone tube, which acts infinitely more durable than the plastic strips of dim RGB lights that you can find for $ 10 or less at the store. The wires that connect the control box and the power brick to the lights and the wall are not twisted, but they are obviously of good quality and there is no danger of wear and tear in the near future.
Every time someone walked into my apartment, they would immediately ask something like, “Wow, what kind of lights are those?” So if you’re looking to start a conversation, neon rope lights are a solid, high-quality option.
Setup and installation: plan ahead to make it easy

Setting up is nice and easy. Take the lights out of the box and plan what shape you will create. Then glue the lights to the desired surface using the supplied adhesive (or screw-in) clips.
Tip: Make sure your design allows the power bricks to be long enough to reach the power source.
Then plug the power brick into a compatible outlet or surge protector and keep the control box at your fingertips. Connect the lights via Bluetooth with the Govee Home app for customization, smart home integration and remote control and you’re ready.

Something you will probably notice while designing and testing different shapes is the inability to make sharp corners with the Govee neon rope. See “v” in “love”. This is clear from the context, but can easily serve as an “in” in another word. In addition, rope lights are generally flexible and easy to operate.
When you have the design in mind and you are ready to mount the lights, I recommend attaching the clips to the lights without removing the cover on the glue initially. This way you can hold it up to get an idea of how many buckles you will need to hang the ropes, give or take a few.

Screw them into the wall with the included anchors, remove the cover and glue them to the underside of your desk, leave them lying on the table – you have more than one option to display neon rope lights and you can always split into DIY solutions like velcro pads or sticky hooks.
Keep this in mind, however: when you stick the sticky side to another surface, you’ll only get one adjustment before it loses its stickiness or detaches from the clasp.
This is all. Now is the time to sync your lights with Govee Home.

Govee Home: Colorful customization

Govee’s device customization app, Govee Home (available for iPhone and Android) is extremely comprehensive, especially if you’re used to the RGB that comes with the remote control and the 16 or so colors you can choose from. You can expect this to make the application complex, but it’s pretty simple after a minute or so of research.
Tip: Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your smartphone before trying to add the device to your network.
Starting from the home page (bottom navigation bar) on the Devices tab (tab selection at the top), you will see all the other Govee products you may have in the middle labeled All.
If you are adding your first Govee device, tap the plus icon in the upper right corner of the page. Now look for your device as marked on the box and select it from the list. Govee Home will look for nearby Govee devices with power to connect. Follow the on-screen instructions to pair your device — for neon rope lights, quickly press the power button on the control unit.
Once your device is connected, rename it as you see fit and connect to your Wi-Fi network.
Tip: If you plan to sync Govee lights with your Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, try choosing a simple name to identify the lights, such as “kitchen cabinets” or “office”.
Now you have the entire Govee arsenal of controls and adjustments at your fingertips; tap your added device to get started.
Using the power button icon at the top of the page to turn the lights on or off is handy when you don’t want to call your Google Nest or go to the control box. Make sure your lights are on or you won’t be able to continue adjusting.
Explore the Effects Lab, where Govee designed pages of preset settings that you can apply to your own lights. Move the brightness by individual percentage points from 1 to 100%. Choose from Music, Color, Scene and DIY modes to let your creative side wander or apply one of the many preset lighting configurations available. How your lights will look at any given moment is entirely up to you.
The color mode allows you to select individual segments of neon ropes and change their colors, adjust their brightness and change between warm and cool tones. You can also select the “Gradient” option to connect lights where their segments meet.
100% brightness is almost dazzling at night, so I recommend starting at around 25 to 50% and adjusting from there. In the morning I usually have a white or dark red light set at about 10% brightness to slightly improve office aesthetics.
Here “IC” (Independent Control) in “RGBIC” works its magic; one light bar is capable of displaying multiple colors, descending and flowing with different shades, effects and brightness levels. When you’re done with the design, save it to “My Colors” and drag it the next day exactly as it was made.
By switching to the Govee Light Studio tab, you will find user-created lighting effects and artificial intelligence for your current application. The next card, the Govee Home Community, is a social media network focused on Govee products – sharing design ideas with other users, giving feedback to the company, or simply showing off your new lights.
The Savvy User Store tab combines offers for Govee products. Lastly, the My Profile tab is a place where you can edit your personal information, change the theme of the app, ask Govee questions before buying, and adjust other similar settings.
Need to buy Govee neon lights?
I absolutely recommend Govee Neon Rope Lights to anyone looking for an RGB accessory for their home. The superior workmanship, comprehensive application and RGBIC that gives Aurora Borealis a run for its money make neon rope lights really shine.
There are only a few minor drawbacks to countless big wins – grab the size you need and upgrade the ambiance of your gaming station or home movie night from $ 59.99.
