Love, Death + Robots (2019—)
This animated anthology series for adults spans genres, with many episodes hitting the Black Mirror comparison button. Robots in a post-apocalyptic city, farmers piloting fur suits and a space mission that went wrong appear in the first season. While episodes can be hit and missed (some have been criticized for their treatment of women), you’ll find plenty of impressive, thought-provoking animations.

This apocalyptic science fiction from Belgium will probably soon turn you away from flying. Set on a plane, Into the Night sees a red-eyed man kidnapped by a soldier who, along with other passengers, eventually survives a deadly global event down on earth. Can they keep the plane long enough to get them to safety? That premise alone should be enough to get you to catch this great, suspenseful thriller.

Hilary Swank is a big star at the heart of the space drama Away. She plays Emma Green, a NASA astronaut and commander of an expedition to Mars. With a time division between Earthbound drama and reliable entertainment above the stratosphere, Away is largely successful in landing on an all-encompassing journey.

Stranger Things (2016—)
It wouldn’t be the best list without Stranger Things. If you somehow missed the Duffer Brothers ’horror ode to the’ 80s and Steven Spielberg, things will soon become limitless. We follow El, an almost mute girl who has been the subject of scientific experiments. It develops telekinetic powers that it uses to defend itself from attacking monsters from a terrifying alternate dimension. The world of Indiana, Hawkins, is lovingly described in detail for anyone who needs a hit of 80s nostalgia, and the unadapted characters, played by a stellar young cast, are part of everything that makes this show tour de force.

Full revelation: Netflix has unfortunately canceled Travelers after its third season, but this tightly planned science fiction from Canada manages to end up with an ambitious bang. We start with Marcy, a woman with a disability who was beaten up after helping a friend escape from a bully. She dies – then comes back to life. This powerful science fiction, guided by characters, reveals its secrets in a clever way, following operatives from the future who have the task of preventing the collapse of society, but also to move through the tricky territory of living a double life.

While Charlie Brooker’s grim anthology series may be hit and missed, at its best, Black Mirror fills its mini-films with exploration of futuristic technological ideas through painful human stories. One is San Junipero, who follows two women from the ’80s (soundtrack for cue banging) as they fall in love with each other in ways they couldn’t in their“ real ”lives out of town on the beach. The technological aspect is revealed by ingenious timing and, in general, the show explores the consequences of our connected lives in disturbing and at times exciting ways.

There’s a reason why this post-apocalyptic series has won seven seasons: The 100 brings rich dilemmas about world-building and morality that push stereotypical characters to unique, compelling places. It is about 100 generations of juvenile detainees sent to Earth to determine if this post-apocalypse is fit for life. Give 100 percent to this.

The German response to Stranger Things deliberately takes time before stepping into completely convincing and original places. Sci-fi noir, Dark bends a journey through time, conspiracies and alienated families into a generational story started by the disappearance of a child. If these types of carefully crafted layers are what you’re looking for in your storytelling, settle in. All three seasons of Darko’s meditative view of time travel and its impact on human nature are waiting to hit you in full force.

Canceling Netflix is no more criminal than refusing The OA. This completely unique story follows Prairie Johnson, a young blind woman who returns after years of disappearing, now with the ability to see. She claims to be the “original angel” and convinces a small group of locals to listen to her impossible story, which includes kidnappings and major escapes. OA is a kind of grounded science fiction that catches you and your heroes completely unprepared when introducing your fantasy concepts. Watch the first two flawless seasons on Netflix and pray the third one picks up somewhere else.
