When the Netflix seriesfirst turned on the Christmas lights in 2016, she found a winning formula with 80s nostalgia, supernatural horrors and the composition of headstrong and close children.
It’s a special show and it’s not easy to replicate the feeling you gain while watching it. But now that we meet abetween two volumes of one season, in addition to years of breaks between one and the other season, I realized it was time to take out a flashlight and start looking for something similar.
Get involved below and you’ll find a list of shows that relate to Stranger Things in one way or another. You may find something that will fill that creepy void. Get ready for alien entities, touching friendships and lots, lots of kids on bikes.
Movies with the atmosphere of Stranger Things
Where to stream: HBO Max
No list of this kind would be complete without Super 8, directed by JJ Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg. In the summer of 1979, while filming a home movie about zombies, a group of teenagers witnessed a truck collide with a train. Unexplained events continue to shake the area. For a mystery, some supernatural action and young friends who ride bikes and use walkie-talkies, give this one a watch.
Where to stream: You can rent ghostbusters for $ 3 on services including Amazon and Voodoo.
We know four best friends who would give Ghostbusters a mega stamp of approval the size of Marshmallow Man. An unforgettable scene from Season 2 of Stranger Things is when Mike, Dustin, Lucas and Will wear exaggerated Ghostbusters costumes to school … only to find out that no one else has dressed for Halloween. In their honor, spend some time with Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver and the rest of the cast of this favorite comedy.
Streets of Fear Trilogy (2021)
Where to stream: Netflix
Yes, I count this as three movies. When Netflix gave up the Fear Street series last summer, I had no idea what a treat it would be. Nostalgia is an element here – the first film takes things back to the ’90s, the second to the’ 70s, and the third to … the 1600s, because who doesn’t like to look back on hats and sleeves with love. Joking! If you liked the focus on Max (Sadie Sink) this season, the actress is a big part of this trilogy.
Where to stream: HBO Max
This horror dealt another brutal blow to the clowns’ reputation. Based on a classic book by Stephen King, the film pitted six sympathetic outcasts against a supernatural entity who loves sewers. The Duffer brothers, who created Stranger Things, acknowledged the book’s great influence on the series. You’ll also spot Finn Wolfhardt (aka Mike) among the actors in the film.
Where to stream: You can rent Fright Night for $ 3 on services including Amazon and Voodoo.
In this slightly terrifying horror film, teenager Charley Brewster (yes, that’s his real name) reveals a terrible secret – his neighbor is actually a vampire and is behind several disappearances in their city of Iowa. For a story about teenagers fighting monsters, feeling 80s, fantastic special effects (and I will say that – hot vampires), Night of Fear is the right way.
Gunpowder & Sky
Where to stream: AMC Plus, Shudder
Can the movie be also similar to Stranger Things? The first 20 minutes of Summer 84 evoke so many strange things, that it is impossible not to compare them with a beloved show. Walkie-talkies, bicycles, synthesizer music, strange disappearances and teenage friends who are on the trail of the perpetrator are all there. But since you are checking this list, it can only mean that it marks all your frames.
Where to stream: It’s free with ads on Tuba. You can also rent Coraline for $ 3 on services including Amazon and Voodoo.
“Children Against Malicious Forces from Parallel Space” could describe Stranger Things and this animated children’s horror film in stop-motion. And both are great choices for your evening.
Red Bank Films
Where to stream: Prime Video
Carrie is the target of some ruthless bullies in a film adaptation of Stephen King’s cult 1976 novel, much like our girl Eleven, who faces vicious teenagers in this season’s Stranger Things (which culminates, of course, in a Carrie-style scene in the film) . skating rink). Stephen King himself did called out seasonal “Carrie riff,” though he didn’t explicitly say what he meant. Anyway, you have to look at the Oscar-nominated portrait of prom queen Sissy Spacek at least once in your life. Why not now?
Where to stream: FuboTV, Paramount Plus
John Krasinski’s tense horror film about a family trying to survive the monster apocalypse is much more painful than Stranger Things, but there are some similarities. In the character of Millicent Simmons, you will find a fearless young protagonist whom the children of Stranger Things would gladly accept into their team. See how she and the others deal with the terrifying creatures that attack when they discover the sound.
New Line Cinema
Nightmare in Elm Street (1984)
Where to stream: Netflix, HBO Max
The eerie end of episode 1 and what happened to Eddie after that were vaguely familiar to me as I watched season 4. Then it hit me: A Nightmare in Elm Street. If you’ve dug up this season of the series, it’s time to go back to the 1984 horror classic. Another fun fact: Victor Krill, a former Eternal victim that Robin and Nancy meet in episode 4, is actually starring Freddy Kruger’s original actor Robert Englund.
Where to stream: HBO Max
Are children’s adventure movies more classic than The Goonies? A group of different young men embark on a dangerous search for hidden treasure. As mine traps and unfamiliar terrain are clearly not enough, the mobster family is also following them. If, like me, you were too scared of the horror elements in this movie as a kid to fully appreciate it, it’s definitely worth putting it back on.
ET the Extra-terrestrial (1982)
Where to stream: Peacock, FuboTV
After spending so much time with the villain from Season 4 of Stranger Things Eternal, I would imagine meeting a benign imaginary creature like ET sounds pretty good. (It’s certainly well deserved.) Open the box of Reese’s Pieces and start watching.
Where to stream: It’s free with ads on the Roku channel. You can also rent goosebumps for $ 3 on services including Amazon and Voodoo.
When a horde of monsters from the legendary RL books by Stine Goosebumps invades the real world, Jack Black and some teenage actors team up to bring them down. This family-friendly horror comedy is more rude than Stranger Things, but it can serve as a solid distraction from the break in the supernatural series.
Warner Bros. Pictures
Endless Story (1984)
Where to stream: It’s free with ads on Tuba. You can also rent NeverEnding Story for $ 4 on services including Amazon, Voodoo and iTunes.
This may be a wild card, but it’s a must for Stranger Things fans or those who missed the movie as kids. Adventure, a friendly dragon and children are the protagonists of the cake. And you can finally sing a themed song with Dustin and Suzie when you watch season 3, episode 8 again.
